Traditional Lebkuchen, Speculatius, Springerles and Marzipan picture cookies and sweets have been given as gifts and as folk art used in holiday celebrations for centuries. These traditions came to America with the European immigrants. There are drawings showing Lebkuchen being made with picture molds from the 16th century. In the beginning of the 19th century, cookies were tinted with food coloring to enhance the pictures.
I've been collecting molds for cookies for years. About five years ago I realized I had too may molds to just make cookies for friends and family. I then decided to look for creative ways to make use of them. I experimented with many clays, finishing techniques and painting methods until I arrived at the folk art I now create. I roll out the clay cookies with an air-dried imported clay. Once dry, I sand the edges and antique them with tea. I hand paint each cookie, adding shading and flourishes as the mood strikes me. They are then sprayed with poly to protect the finish. The finished cookie will last a life time.
